The Benefits of Cacao:
We’ve been misled to believe that the benefits of cacao are only as used in deserts that we should eat sparingly, but cacao is such a great source of nutrition that it’s known as one of the top 5 Super Foods in the World!
Yep, it’s time to stop thinking of chocolate as a treat, and instead as a staple food source, or better yet, both!
Cacao is the highest antioxidant food on the planet, the #1 source of magnesium, iron, chromium and is also extremely high in PEA (Phenethylamine, the adrenal-related chemical we produce when we’re in love. PEA also plays a role in increasing focus and alertness.) theobromine (cardiovascular support), and anandamide (“bliss chemical”). Raw Chocolate balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, is a natural aphrodisiac, elevates your mood and energy levels. It’s easy to now see the benefits of cacao as a superfood.
Cacao is chocolate in its raw form. However, the chocolate that most people consume does not have much of the real chocolate/cacao in it. So, put down the Hershey, or Snickers bar, that’s not chocolate. Some people buy the inexpensive brands, thinking they’re getting a better deal, but despite the powerful marketing, what they actually pay for (in addition to the cost of the marketing) is sugar and other fillers. These are literally addictive (like a dangerous drug). If you want the nutritional health benefits, aim for 70% cacao content and above to minimize the sugar, and maximize the good stuff. You want it RAW, because a lot of the healthy benefits are lost when the chocolate is heated or processed. Some of the best I’ve ever tasted is Sacred Chocolate bars (they’re heart shaped), but they’re are many quality brands out there now. You will soon acquire a love for the real thing, and your Jedi mind will be impervious to clever marketing mind tricks.
Get this! Real Raw Chocolate does NOT naturally contain caffeine, but it is the only source of a similar, but superior molecule called Theobromine. Theobromine is very similar to caffeine, but does not stimulate the nervous system as intensely. It is also known as an aphrodisiac. Again surprisingly, it’s an effective anti-bacterial substance and kills streptococci mutans (the primary organism that causes cavities). So it’s actually good for teeth!
Maybe the best way to ingest more raw cacao is to use the powdered form (which should be 100% cacao), which you can easily add to smoothies for a great taste and boost in nutrition. My favorite so far is a South American Raw Organic Cacao Powder (You have to taste it and you’ll know the difference). I usually tend to prefer the taste of chocolate from Ecuador.
You can easily put this into smoothies, and desserts. I even put it into my coffee, but a nice cup of real cocoa is great too!
Something fun to try:
Instead of fattening, sugary, chocolate desserts, try combining cacao powder, avocados, a pinch of sea salt, and honey, multiple superfoods in one amazing chocolate pudding treat!
